3 Doable Ayurvedic Nutrition Principles
Jan 02, 2024Ayurvedic Nutrition can be polarizing in that it makes complete, perfect sense while feeling simultaneously confusing and overwhelming with the vast number of detailed guidelines.
These are my top three Ayurvedic Nutrition principles to adopt and master that offer a sustainable approach to nutrition. They are simple but not easy and will still require you to apply effort and use your intelligence. But they offer a simple and effective approach to managing your day-to-day eating while helping you achieve many common health goals.
Quality: It's not just about what we eat, but the quality of the food we choose. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods that are fresh and full of nutrients. Think vibrant veggies, wholesome grains, and nourishing, natural ingredients. Foods of this quality are sattvic by nature and support health in the body and harmony in the mind. (Eat a predominantly sattvic diet.)
Qualities: Ayurveda teaches us to consider the inherent qualities of foods. Every ingredient has its unique attributes—some are warming, others cooling; some are light, while others are heavy, etc. Balancing these qualities in our meals supports harmony within our mind and bodies. (Like increases like, opposites create balance.)
Quantity: Eating mindfully goes beyond just portion control. It's about listening to our bodies, honoring hunger and fullness cues, and finding that sweet spot where we feel satisfied, not overfilled. (Take what you need; need what you take).
Following these 3 principles will effectively support eating good quality, nourishing foods that are appropriate for your unique circumstances, in the appropriate amount, taking care not to over burden your digestive system or contribute to unnecessary weight gain.
What are your favorite go-to Ayurvedic Nutrition principles? And what elements confuse you?
