What You’ll Learn in Our Yoga Teacher Training: A Detailed Syllabus Breakdown
Nov 04, 2024Yoga teacher training is one of the most relevant, exciting, inspiring and empowering training courses available in the marketplace (imo :p). It speaks to and directly serves the topmost needs of society:
- How to manage increasing stress levels
- How to understand and manage our mind and mental health (with real solutions that lead to mental vitality); and,
- How to cultivate real connection and love (and overcome loneliness).
Even if you don't intend to become a teacher, yoga teacher training offers life knowledge and skills that will help you personally live a more vibrant and meaningful life.
At Live to Serve Academy, our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program blends ancient teachings with practical, modern applications, all while honouring the spirit of service, community, and self-discovery. This training offers a comprehensive curriculum aligned with standards set by Yoga Alliance, Yoga Australia, and the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT).
In our program, you’ll explore key areas of yoga study from anatomy and philosophy to the art of teaching, enriched by the holistic knowledge of Ayurveda and the devotional path of Bhakti Yoga.
Here’s an overview of what you’ll learn:
Anatomy and Physiology: The Foundation of Safe Practice and Teaching
We begin with a comprehensive exploration of Anatomy and Physiology as it applies to yoga, offering insights into both functional and physiological contexts. This module integrates relevant knowledge from both Eastern and Western sciences, helping you understand how the body moves, functions, and responds in various poses and practices. This serves as a foundation for grasping alignment principles, injury prevention, and modifications to support different body types and needs. This knowledge is essential for creating safe, intelligent, and accessible classes that honour each student’s unique experience on the mat.
We also look at the study of matter and spiritual energy, which is essential for understanding the system of Yoga. To help you truly grasp the science of Ayurveda and Yoga and their application, we explore the physical body as well as the fundamental elements and energies at play within the universe.
Yoga Techniques and Practice
This is where we’ll spend ample time on the mat, immersing ourselves in the practice and falling in love with the experience of Hatha Yoga. You’ll build a strong foundation in traditional Hatha and gain an introduction to Vinyasa and intelligent sequencing. Discover the power of chanting and mantras, the subtle art of mudras and bandhas, and learn how to guide students into a state of deep relaxation through blissful, yummy Yoga Nidras that leave them floating away from your classes.
The Therapeutics of Yoga module covers the essentials of asana, pranayama, and meditation, with a focus on alignment, breathing / pranayama, and sequencing principles. This part of the training emphasises the nuances of teaching modifications, grounded in accessibility and safety for all bodies.
Through guided practice, peer sessions, and live demonstrations, you’ll grow in confidence, refining your skill to lead others while deepening your own understanding of yogic practices. This module prepares you to share Yoga’s healing benefits with grace and intention.
Yoga Wisdom and Lifestyle
Our Integration of Yoga pillar guides you through the timeless teachings that define the yogic path. From the sacred wisdom of the Vedas and the heart-centered approach of Bhakti Yoga, to the ethics found in the Yamas and Niyamas, this module grounds you in wisdom that supports personal growth and a life of service, love, and purpose. Through readings, discussions, and reflections, you’ll be invited to embody these teachings yourself, while learning how to make them accessible to students from all walks of life.
As a yoga teacher, your role is not only to guide others but also to set an example of balanced living and ethical integrity. This portion of the training, provides you with the tools to establish healthy boundaries, honour your scope of practice, and embody a personal code of conduct that upholds both tradition and inclusivity.
To support your longevity in the profession, we emphasise self-care practices, drawing from Ayurvedic principles on lifestyle, nutrition, and mental balance. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to sustain a vibrant teaching practice and inspire others by example.
Ayurveda for Yoga: Health for a Higher Purpose
A unique feature of our program is our Ayurveda for Yoga module, which introduces you to the principles of Ayurveda as an integral part of the yoga system. Here, you’ll learn the fundamentals of doshas, daily routines (dinacharya), and Ayurvedic self-care techniques that promote holistic health and balance. Understanding the interplay between Ayurveda and yoga allows you to offer deeper support to your students and adapt your classes to honor individual and seasonal needs, while promoting a holistic framework that aligns with the goal of yoga.
Continuing Education and Professional Development
Our commitment to your growth doesn’t stop at certification. We’ll also guide you how to create a sustainable teaching pathway through lifelong learning, mentorship, and specialisation. We cover essential topics like liability insurance, setting up a business, marketing ethically, and joining professional organisations like Yoga Australia to support your career and community involvement.
